VAr Compensator Studies

Advanced reactive power control solutions for enhanced voltage regulation and system stability

What is a Static Var Compensator (SVC)?

A Static Var Compensator (SVC) is a shunt-connected device designed to regulate reactive power by dynamically absorbing or generating vars to maintain or control specific electrical system parameters, typically bus voltage.

TCR

Thyristor-Controlled Reactor

Continuously adjustable reactance using partial conduction of thyristor valves.

TSC

Thyristor-Switched Capacitor

Switches capacitors ON/OFF via thyristor valves, often paired with damping reactors.

TSR

Thyristor-Switched Reactor

Switches reactors ON/OFF using thyristor valves.

Benefits of Static Var Compensators

SVC systems provide critical capabilities for modern power system operation and control

Voltage Control

Steady-state and dynamic voltage regulation, even at points distant from the SVC connection.

System Stability

Enhancing system voltage during normal and disturbed conditions.

Transmission Capacity

Increasing circuit capacity limited by receiving-end voltage or stability constraints.

Voltage Recovery

Restoring bus voltage after faults or load rejection events.

Oscillation Damping

Mitigating oscillations (0.2–2.0 Hz) to improve dynamic stability.

Power Factor Control

Rapid adjustment for power factor, load imbalances, and harmonic filtering.

How We Perform SVC Studies

Our comprehensive approach ensures accurate analysis and optimal SVC performance

1

Data Collection

Gather relevant information, including single-line diagrams (SLD), SVC specifications, and system-specific data (e.g., load flow, short circuit, transient, harmonic, stability).

System Documentation

2

System Modeling

Build detailed models of the SVC and the power system using ETAP, PSS®E, or PSCAD/EMTDC software.
